Hello Boating season!

15/02/2020 by Leonie Persoon

We’re back June 1th!

It’s hard to believe, The Netherlands has brought in a ban on all gatherings of more than three people until June 1th 2020
Unfortunately no boat tours until June and yes…Covid-19 is making us all reschedule our events, sheduled tours and private cruises for a bit !

But when we’re back…we show you our lovely city!

Through (actually it’s around ) city center, amongst others we tell you the high lights of the city. Jan is always steering the boat. I’m your tour guide or our good friend Kevin.

Hop on ! and see what this beautiful city has to offer. A lot of diversity in architecture, I would say………..

When family is coming to visit, or you want to celebrate your own private party, you can rent the boat privatly. With or without a package of lovely cold drinks.

Beside the private rent or the regular boat tours, we have this boating season some nice events too!

Serious stuff like The Jewish History tour or fun stuff like a Cocktail Cruise. It’s up to you!

Let’s get ready to go boating!

Can we see you aboard?

Kindest regards Jan & Leonie

van Kleef Tasting & boat tour

17/09/2016 by Leonie Persoon

Van Kleef liqueurs tasting & boat tour

In the heart of The Hague’s historic centre you can find a hidden treasure named Van Kleef. Founded in 1842, this sole surviving jenever and liqueur distillery continues to operate to this day. There is a wide and enticing range of local liquors on display, each one based on a traditional recipe.

Van Kleef liqueurs tasting & boat tourIn 1842 Lambertus Theodorus van Kleef established a distillery of fine liqueurs and bitters, which later became known as the Stoomdistilleerderij 1e klasse Van Kleef v/h ’t Anker. A wide range of distilled alcoholic beverages were produced, imported and sold in the adjacent liquor store. The distillery also exported a number of its products. Van Kleef became the last distillery in The Hague to close his doors in 1986.

In 1995 Van Kleef reopened after an extensive renovation. It’s now a museum, liquor shop, wholesale business and the perfect setting for meetings, parties and receptions.

Step inside and the craftsmanship, quality and history of this traditional local company are tangible.

We combine the boat tour with a visit -with an English tour -through the Kleef Museum. During the tour you’ll hear about how The Hague was once the  important distillery city  in the Netherlands.

You’ll see the distilling equipment, authentic ‘drankorgels’ (racks where the liqueurs and spirits were kept) and copper stills. Many of the products can be sampled during a spirits tasting session.

van Kleef tasting & boat tour will be presented on:

  • Boat tour 13:00 hrs. at boarding point next to Hilton Hotel-  Mauritskade 10, starting with a little shot 🙂
  • Van Kleef tasting starts 14:00 hrs.
  • 15:30 event end Lange Beestenmarkt 109

A tasting of 6 different Van Kleef jenevers and/or liqueurs. On the table(s) they keep refilling;

– warm, oven fresh bread

– two, different home made pastes (one always vegetarian)

– fresh olives

– roasted nuts (peanuts, cashew nuts, almonds etc.)

And we’re off and running!

16/06/2015 by Leonie Persoon

Final we’re off and running The Hague Boat business. It was a crazy time, the last days before the official inspector was coming for the test, and the deadline in mind, for the bachelorette party last Saturday June 13th. Fortunate the kick-off wasn’t Friday 13th, otherwise we could have bad luck….now we had nice weather and everything went well! We did a tour through city centre ( well because of the beat box we skipped the historical facts) and after city centre we set course to MaMaKelly restaurant in Binckhorst harbor.

So much fun to have the first boat tour with lovely girls on board. Daisy loved the combination sailor cap & prosecco …

I want to paint it black

11/06/2015 by Leonie Persoon

On this sunny day i can tell you the story of painting the boat. How many layers of primer first ( gold colour) and then another grey layer…specially for those parts touching the water, ect.ect. But that is probably so boring. Although it is interesting to calculate the immensely amount of containers paint. Sorry i’m too tired to make the calculation. For Daisy only the last make-up is true! that’s makes her beautiful, and nobody will see her thick layers of foundation any more. And of course we’re going for black. The ribbon in the middle and the bench is a indefinable colour of orange. Brick-red ? Rust brown? you name it, we love it!

Stairway to heaven

20/05/2015 by Leonie Persoon

Well the hole boat building is a piece of art, of course….but the stairs is really an unique design of Jan! It can be used, not only as stairs, its even a shutter. You can lift it up, access to storage ( do we have more beer? ) or when its down, the guide can use it as a chair. Might not be the most comfortable place to sit down( its probably going to be my spot) . Its a very safe stairs, you can’ t step next to the steps and of course a proper guardrail will be made. All this in at the front of the boat. Back in the boat, the engine is almost ready . Yanmar 20 PK ; one of the best and cleanest diesel engine of the world.

Boatylicious

18/04/2015 by Leonie Persoon

Well Daisy got her body! Jan closed every part of her now….It wasn’t an easy job. Specially to make the round curves connected with the small front (or back) side, is probably the most difficult part of this boat building project. Finally it all has to fit in. The difficulty is to make the right shape vertically perfect, but also horizontal the perfect rounding.  With an old cylinder, waltz & hammer and good old fashion handicraft he made it! And i have to say: ” she’s bodylicious“. An eleven metre tall lady, we love her already. Now she need some power: next chapter….

Riveting

26/03/2015 by Leonie Persoon

I will try to tell something about an old traditional maritime skill; riveting. Nowadays probably only used on old classic vessels or air-planes. Craftwork like hammersmith a railing is also possible. Years ago Jan made a beautiful foot for a mast on a nice classic vessel. Some piece of art, if i may say…You need more persons to help you with the bloody hot metal pins, and to strike the pins hard and properly into the hole. Thankful Jan is treating Daisy more nicely …

Riveting is a fixing technique whereby metal parts are fixed to each other using metal pins known as rivets. Between 1875, when there was a major increase in building ships using iron, and 1950 all metal ship structures were riveted; from 1950 onwards riveting was almost replaced entirely by welding. Due to the use of riveting in a number of famous historic ship restorations the interest in riveting is starting to increase, also amongst private ship owners.

Materials and tools
In addition to the metal parts that have to be fixed together, you will need the following tools for riveting: a furnace for heating the rivets, a punch and a drill for making holes in metal, a cutting and bending tool for making the metal parts into the required size and shape, a riveting hammer and, dollies in various shapes and sizes and tongs for holding the hot rivets.
Riveting is hard work, that was previously undertaken using hand tools. These days pneumatically and electrically-operated tools are used in addition to the hand tools. Wear heavy-duty gloves, a face mask and hearing protectors. If want more information about traditional maritime skills, check this website.

The Butt

18/03/2015 by Leonie Persoon

A very special detail on a boat is the butt. It certainly makes a boat beautiful, the shape lift it gracefully out of the water . I can´t deny to see some similarity with the curves of a women. And if you hear male boat lovers talking about shape, how touched they are ,you almost think its feminine. It probably explain why a lot of boats has a female name….secretly its the boat owner first love. I don´t mind to compete with the Iron lady `Daisy`. Unfortunately her butt is flat! In fact her head, front-side of the boat, will have the same shape. And i´m sorry but no women want to be flat! But respect please, its al about character and i do adore her already! I really don´t have the courage to say something about her tight line……

IMG_4947MarcoZwinkelsbutt2015-01-24 12.02.24

The roots of making Daisy goes back in time…back to the time that our grandfathers were farmers in the area called `West-land`. My grandfather was a farmer who worked in the glass houses.  To pick up tomatoes, flowers or vegetables and prepare them for transport for auction. The transport in those days was by boat. We had a lot of small canals between the glass houses and everybody brought there stuff to auction for sale. The grandfather of Jan was a skipper in those days. To deliver your products easily on the boat, the flat butt was very useful. Just lay the front or backside of the boat near the dock and with a wheelbarrow you hop on and hop off. Heavy physical work, by the way….

How It’s Made

11/03/2015 by Leonie Persoon

See how a boat is put together? were do you start? well mostly by thinking a lot…and with a drawing on the kitchen-floor. On a piece of cardboard, like making a dress. Sewing pattern for grown-up boys! Instead of fabric you have steel, you need another scissors too! No sewing machine but a lot of welding. A number of welding miles  is needed. The distance of several soccer fields.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABut basic it’s the same, cut the part and bring it all together. Starting with one tall piece for the bottom, lift the front & back side up…like a banana and with a lot of imagination you already can see a boat!

For those how want to try, i add a ship pattern.
